چکیده

In this paper, we describe the ideal traits of a new hire in the IC field and the various university/industry relationships that we use to educate our students. We describe briefly a sequence of courses used to give students practical design experience on campus. 1. Characteristics The general traits that faculty members believe are important for students to have are summarized in Table 1. Panel review sessions that we have had with local industry tend to support the data in Table 1. The common thread in all the traits listed is that they relate to design. Unfortunately, the most commonly cited trait “Use of modern Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools to produce a realistic design” is the most resource intensive trait to teach. University/Industry relationships are critical in working together to provide an environment in which this trait can be taught. All the other traits are learned by students actually doing realistic designs (except for fundamentals). This of course leads back to the need for EDA tools and computers to run the software. Table 1: General Traits of Industry's Ideal New Hire.
